This project involved the careful reworking of a late-Victorian terrace in South Yarra, including a new rear footprint and garage. Previous renovations had left the interior fragmented, so the focus became restoring coherence and atmosphere while respecting the scale and character of the terrace. With the client downsizing from a larger home, we prioritised flow, storage and everyday comfort rather than expansiveness.
Heritage cues are referenced quietly: simplified cornices integrating concealed AC, expressed skirtings and heightened openings that emphasise verticality. Material expression is restrained yet detailed — a monolithic stainless-steel island, custom dining tables, and subtle joinery touches including stainless-lined finger pulls and linear ventilation slots.
The house supports a gentle rhythm — morning light in the kitchen and bedrooms, evenings settling into the living room. It feels grounded, intimate and enduring; an evolution of its Victorian origins rather than a departure from them.
